Assistant Editor, The Brief
TL;DR Kharon is seeking a full-time Assistant Editor based in Washington D.C. This role requires in-office attendance at least 3 days a week.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work with the editor to plan, shape, and write news, trending, evergreen, and analysis stories.
- Rigorously edit, copy edit, produce, and publish stories with accuracy and speed.
- Write engaging headlines, captions, and social media posts.
- Champion story formats that prioritize accessibility and respect our audience’s time.
- Utilize Kharon’s innovative research and data tools to generate story ideas.
- Learn and stay current with terminology and news related to our pillars, such as sanctions and export controls
- Assist in editing newsletters and video scripts.
- Use data and analytics to evaluate performance and make strategic adjustments.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- 4+ years of newsroom editing experience.
- Strong copy editing skills and fluency in AP style.
- Reporting experience.
- Passion for global, national security, business, and political news.
- Experience with or an interest in compliance issues, including sanctions, financial crimes, export controls, military end-use, supply chains, and forced labor.
- Familiarity with social media platforms and SEO best practices.
- Demonstrated experience in high-growth, fast-paced environments with strong adaptability to change.
- Keen judgment, initiative, ownership, and follow-through.
- Attentive to detail with excellent interpersonal skills.

Kharon is seeking a full-time assistant editor to support daily coverage for the Brief—our media arm that publishes essential insights into the world of sanctions, export controls, supply chains, and other key global risk and compliance issues. Working alongside the Brief’s editor, this role combines editing and writing and is ideal for a detail-oriented journalist with strong news judgment who is comfortable working on complex, technical subjects in a fast-paced environment.

The base salary range at Kharon is set between $80,000-$100,000. Please note that this figure does not necessarily include potential bonuses, commissions, benefits, or equity that may be part of the overall compensation package.
